The Punt Gun Story
The Punt Gun
Bailey Winters
Bailey Winters
In the 1900s my grandfather, Bailey Winters, was a shepherd on the Ouse washes in the summer, and a wildfowler in the winter. He had a small punt gun that held half a pound of powder and half a pound of shot. They used to use hemp as wadding years ago.
In 1939 grandad got the big one. It held a pound of powder and a pound of shot and this is it in the picture above. My father went with my grandad to pick it up off the steam train at Ely Station with a horse and cart which they borrowed from a local farmer. The make of this gun is Wesley and Richards. Grandad made his living by shooting the ducks on the Washes and sending them to London in hessian sacks.
When grandad became ill in the 1970s he sold it to a local farmer under the condition that it was kept in the fen. I, Andrew Winters, purchased the gun from the farmers daughter in 2005 after the local farmer passed away, to keep it in the fen and back into the family after a long period of time.

Below are some other pictures of Fenland wildfowlers.
